Entire occupations that were previously unattractive and declining, corresponding to petroleum engineering in the 1980s and 1990s, have quite suddenly become attractive and high-paid—due to increased energy prices and new applied sciences for home extraction of oil and gas. Others, similar to these linked to manufacturing and construction—industries during which well over half of all engineers are employed—have declined over the same interval. Biomedical Ph.D.s are unusually prolonged and often require additional years of postdoctoral coaching, yet after completion these with such degrees experience labor market demand and remuneration which might be relatively low. In the late 20th and early 21st centuries the sector of environmental engineering expanded to handle international warming and sustainability. Were these the opening salvos of the “alarm” stage of another year cycle of alarm/boom/bust, the sixth such cycle since World War II? A deep recession with excessive unemployment
